T2 POP-UP CONCEPT STORE
PERTH FESTIVAL, PERTH
THE CURRENT SPACE
The site is an open space in the 4-level atrium of a shopping mall located in Perth CBD.

CLIENT BRIEF
T2 is a premium tea company that sells over 180 types of tea and tea-making products. They make tea, “but differently”- reinventing and reimaging the tea leaf.
They are commissioning the design of a pop-up concept store as part of the Perth Festival. The space needs to be experiential and create an engaging and memorable event for the occupants of the space. It should also represent their brand.

CONCEPT
FLUID INFUSION
A performance space that embodies
the art of tea making and
appreciation and enjoyment of tea.
The pop-up store will represent the idea of tea in three dimensions. Tea is not a beverage to be consumed quickly, it should be enjoyed. It can be a solo experience but can also be one to share; for gathering, connecting and the ‘infusion’ of people and culture.
The concept of the space is formed around the tradition and ritual of tea and the performance associated- the preparation, how the water is poured and how it is enjoyed. Deconstructing these steps informed the final design.
Materials and moodboard
From afar people will be able to see a bright glossy orange box like the distinguishable T2 tea boxes with the interior hidden giving a sense of intrigue. Visitors will start their experience by walking through the entryway down a dark tunnel void of colour or warmth to dampen their senses. But they will then turn the corner and be faced with a warm inviting space. The ephemerality of the space will be in its changing nature between the performance and its audience.
The performance space, the T2 Bar, will be positioned in the centre of the space. Here the performance and performers will change throughout the day. There will be new teas to smell/touch/try, watch the preparation of tea and listen to talks and demonstrations. The experience will always be changing. There is space for you to stand around the bar and observe or seating for you to relax and enjoy.
3D Render Visualisation - Bar Area
Axonometric drawing & floor plan
The seating will be a focal point of the space. The benches wrap around the space with timber panelling curving up the walls representing the pouring of water in the ritual of tea. Raw timber wraps the benches and walls, concrete
covers the floors and bars, and the black ceilings and other dark finishes allow the T2 signature orange to pop (seen in the signage, product, and teacups). The use of these materials will give an industrial, paired back quality and feel to the space.
3D Render Visualisation - Seating
An important part of the design is the shape and will represent step two of the tea ritual which is measuring and step three which is pouring and overflowing. The pop-up store will be square but with curved bench seating wrapped in timber which flows up the walls giving the space movement and a low ceiling to give a cozy feel.
The space will be dimly lit by exposed Edison bulbs and pendants. As it is enclosed with no natural or external light entering the space minimal lighting will be used in the entry tunnel, enough to guide the customer into the space.
3D visualisation
The concept stores design will be in harmony with the retail stores with the mirroring of materials and lighting to create a cohesive brand experience in line with T2’s ideas and brand philosophies.
