CONCEPT
UP IN THE AIR
The thoughts of travelling can evoke strong and contrasting feelings for parents of young children. It can be both fun and stressful. The concept for the project is “Up in the Air”; a space that will combat the stresses of travelling and focus on the positive feeling of openness and freedom.
Moodboard
Throughout the design process it became evident that space and privacy were essential. When exploring possible spatial layouts, and after consultation with the client, a single-user floor plan was chosen. There are five separate parent rooms (rather than the typical communal space) available to one family at a time.
The space has everything a parent could want and need and includes a comfortable seating area for the whole family, changing and feeding zones including a microwave, entertainment area, luggage storage, charging station and toilet for adults and children. This layout provides excellent safety and privacy; users feel at ease knowing their children (and luggage) are secure in one place and that they will not be disturbed.
Durability and hygiene were a top priority when choosing materials. Light grey vinyl on the floors blends with warm wood laminate and bright wall tiles provide minimal exposed surfaces able to withstand high traffic and constant cleaning. A hygienic light-toned Corian Engineered Stone was chosen for all benches to ensure a clean and durable space.
To combat the darkness of the small windowless space an artificial concealed lighting system was incorporated behind circular pastel blue and green wall panels. The system can be dimmed which allows for a calm and relaxed mood. There is also a feature cloud light and LED-lit paper plane mobile providing child-centred features for the space.
